Hand-Piecing for Reproductions
Learn to hand-piece an 1860s era block "Union Square" while imagining what it was like to
wonder every night what your loved ones were doing in the 19th century military. Believe it or not,
it's a fun class! Civil War background and facts included. 9 a.m - 4 p.m..All skill levels.
Applique in Bloom
Here's a great way to learn or review basic applique techniques, including how to work with bias
stems and make smooth circles. A guild workshop chooses its method: either award-winning
hand applique (needleturn) OR invisible turned-edge machine applique. 9 - 4. All skill levels.
Color-Block Power
Everyone begins with the same stack of fabrics and the same block pattern. The color/value
arrangement is up to you! The afternoon show'n'tell will reveal how individualistic we all are! A
fun exercise in value placement and use of color accents. Also a good review of basic piecing
and pressing techniques. 9 - 4. All skill levels.
Cut-Out Chintz Applique (Broderie Perse)
This is a reproduction workshop based on early 1800s chintz applique where everyone gets
started on a beautiful wall-hanging. Take this chance to learn secrets of cutting chintz flower
segments, lay-out sequence, and basting for layers. It's a great time to review hand applique
basics! Get tips on trapunto and appliqued shark's teeth. Background of America's early
industrial age is provided. A great session for quilters and history buffs alike. 9-4. All skill levels
welcome (though some handwork experience is helpful).
Half-Day Design Workshops (9-11 or 1-3)
Four-Block Designs for Applique Medallions (The Fab Fours)
We'll experiment with certain blocks that, when sewn together, create a central area perfect for
appliqued motifs. An easy way to get the effect of more complicated borders without actually
adding them. Fun, with sketching and laughing expected. All skill levels.
Vine Design: Working with Bias Stems
Practice bias strip techniques, plus experiment with designing your own border vines. We'll
practice on a small tablemat which you piece ahead of time. Lots of good ideas. All skill levels.

4/09 - In Development (check with me if you are interested) Adventures of Civil War Quilts Pre-Civil War was the hey-day of beautiful handworked quilts. What happened to some of these lovely quilts when the war years descended? What happened in the lives of the quilters who made them? Did quilts have functions during the war itself? This presentation will feature some story and diary accounts from the time period, along with reproduction blocks and wall-hangings that help to demonstrate the lives of Civil War quilts. A fun program for quilt history buffs.
