Dear Scrappy Advice to the Quilt-Lorn from Scrappy Truelove
Dear Scrappy,

I don't really have a problem, I just wanted to say hello. I enjoy your advice. What's your favorite
quilting tool?

Tilly
Dear Tilly,

How nice to hear from you. A warm hello back!
My answer about the favorite tool might vary depending on what kind of a quilting week I'm
having! Along with many other quilters, I love experimenting with (and purchasing) various tools of the
trade. Some of them are helpful, others are just gadgets that don't do much at all.
Overall, though, I'd have to say that I wouldn't want to live without my large
design wall. This is
nothing fancy - only a flannel-covered slab of foam board, about 4 feet by 8 feel that sits in my sewing
area. By placing fabrics and design ideas on it, I give myself time to think.
I can sit back and analyze my project as it rests on this wall. I can leave the room, get a snack, or
go to bed and come back the next day. My project ideas wait for me there. With "new eyes" I can keep
thinking, or try new thoughts.
Seeing fabric shapes and colors on my "wall" gives me visual pleasure. Even if I'm not in the
middle of decision-making, I put something up - any quilting block or project at hand. This way, as I
pass by the wall, I'm reminded that my life isn't a blank slate, but is full of color and activity. It's a great
morale booster, you see.
If I have a week or two full of other life problems, I look at this wall - sometimes it's just
displaying left-over triangles or orphan blocks - and I feel better. I know that quilting is there for me. I
know that in the midst of other activities, I can turn my mind to quilting, and imagine what to do for a
new or working project. I may
look like I'm fixing dinner or taking a friend to the doctor's, but I'm really
thinking and planning about quilts.
Also, when my husband walks past the design wall and notices fabric or blocks on there, he
assumes that I'm "working," and doesn't feel compelled to ask me what I did all day. This is a slight
design wall perk that I appreciate.
It's been great hearing from you, Tilly!

Happy Quilting,
                                                                                               Scrappy
